Druids Glen
The famed County Wicklow golf course, named European Golf Resort of the Year in 2005, was designed by Pat Ruddy & Tom Craddock and has undergone extensive upgrades to cement its nickname the ‘Augusta of Europe’.
Now a 7,222-yard par-72 course built to USGA standards, the restoration project involved stripping just over 90,000m2 of topsoil and replacing it. Additionally, the greens required 7,000 tonnes of rootzone, 2,000 tonnes of gravel and 5,000m of drainage. The resort also invested €1.3 million in a modern irrigation system, wall to wall, and upgraded pathways, covering a total of 26,000m2.

The resort, which was originally built in the 16th century as Woodstock House, has a rich history that includes hosting famous musicians and being the site of four Irish Opens – with Colin Montgomerie and Sergio Garcia among the winners.
With the renovations, Druids Glen Golf Course is poised to reclaim its place as one of the top golf destinations in Europe.
Seamus Neville, Owner of The Neville Hotel Group, expressed his excitement for the reopening, stating: “We have made a significant financial commitment to the renovation of Druids Glen Golf Course and Clubhouse, with the aim of bringing it to the very top of the list of world-class golf courses. This included rebuilding the greens, which is expected to result in perfect surfaces and modernised tweaks. We believe that the renovations have elevated the resort to a new level, and we can’t wait to see the impact they’ll have on our guests and the local community.”

Hole 1
A sweet opening hole with everything on full display from the high tee, next to the clubhouse. A generous fairway awaits for your tee shot. The centre bunker is the line for your tee shot and the green feeds from both sides.

Hole 2
A beautiful garden hole setting with a stone wall and path if you go long. Club choice here is pivotal as depending on the pin placement, there can be up to a 2-club difference between a pin placement on the front right and back left of the green. The green has a cheeky tier across the front third ensuring a tricky putt for anything hit short.

Hole 3
A sharp dog-leg from right to left, protected on both sides by trees. Anything just short of the bunker on the right of the fairway is the perfect tee shot. This will leave a short iron into an undulating green surrounded by pot bunkers.

Hole 4
A hard swinging dog-leg from left to right, similar to 11 in Augusta but in reverse. This hole plays significantly downhill. Try to keep your tee shot tight to the right ride of the fairway and you will catch the downslope. Hole 5
Another blind tee shot but the bunker on the right serves as a guide. Aim to go more left of this bunker depending on your length. Your next shot is either a lay up to a good yardage or a risk reward attempt at the green. The green that slopes from back to front is protected to the right and short by bunkers and don’t dare miss the green left.

Hole 6
An uphill left to right dog-leg that plays every inch of its yardage. Beware the principals nose bunkers in the fairway. The second shot plays into a green that is protected on both sides by tall trees and a bunker short of the green.

Hole 7
A swinging right to left dog-leg. e braver you are the more left you should aim with your tee shot. Beware the 3 sisters of bunkers to the right. The green slips quickly into the water on the left of the par 4 7th, with little forgiveness for an approach shot drifting off-line.

Is there a more picturesque par 3? Don’t underestimate this hole or it will make you look foolish. Club selection is key and pay special attention to the wind.

Everything is on display on hole 9. Avoid the bunker on the left, walk across the suspension bridge after teeing off on the 9th is one of the many unique moments at Druids Glen. And the new infinity green ensures a teasing approach. The green has fall offs between pot bunkers. Pay careful attention to your yardage and commit to the shot.

Hole 10
Favour the right side of the fairway with your tee shot but keep short of the trees and rough on the right. The fairway slopes from left to right and may leave the ball below/above your feet for your second shot to an elevated green protected by bunkers. Do not miss the green to the right.

Hole 11
The par 5 11th – as on the upcoming 16th – has centre-line bunkers to give you a choice of tee shot, the short route right or longer route left. The trees looming behind the green frame your final approach shot in a blaze of colour.

Hole 12
The iconic par 3 12th, with its Celtic cross below the tee and attractive stone bridges crossing the stream, is one of Ireland’s famous par 3 holes. Select you club carefully as the green is significantly below your tee shot. Play it in Spring/Summer and the bank behind the green is awash in pinks, yellows, and reds.

Hole 13
The best par 4 you will ever play; well, we like to think so. One of the most daunting tee shots in Druids Glen, a high-rise tee shot it is imperative to hit the fairway and avoid the stream along the right. Your second shot may be a layup short of the lake or an attempt at the green depending on your yardage. The green slopes towards the lake to the left of the green.

Hole 14
An uphill left to right dog-leg. e high-rise trees on the right help protect any attempts to cut the corner. Strategic bunker placement places a demand on tee shot accuracy. A good tee shot
should leave a short iron into a severely undulating green that exposes a magnificent 600 year old sycamore tree behind the green.

Hole 15
There are two things to contemplate with your tee shot. The L shaped bunker on the right makes the fairway very narrow should you look to play past it and you must keep short of the lake in front of the green also. The green is narrow in width which commands an accurate shot into a green that slopes from back to front.

Hole 16
The bunkers in the middle of the fairway mean you must make a decision. Longer hitters will go left, and average hitters must go right or lay up short. If you get the tee shot right, you must avoid the bunkers up the right of the fairway and the green is protected by bunkers on all sides. Don’t be shy to take an extra club as the green plays significantly up hill. The Great Sugarloaf looms in the distance behind the green that slopes from back to front.

Hole 17
The final par 3 is also the toughest of Druids Glen’s short holes. Select your club and commit. With the island green it promises a late splash of drama. You can still walk on water here, but the bridges might be a better option.

Hole 18
A par 5 to finish with the iconic Woodstock House set in the background. Avoid the fairway bunkers at all costs and you’ll likely make par. The green plays up hill with your approach and slopes from back to front. Bunkers are short and long of the green so be sure to carefully select your club.
